Spine Health forโ€ฆLIVING WELL ๐ŸŒฟ

Move well. Rest well. Live well.

Our countdown continues: 1๏ธโƒฃ2๏ธโƒฃ days. 1๏ธโƒฃ2๏ธโƒฃ thoracic vertebrae. 1๏ธโƒฃ global message.

Spine health is part of our overall health and wellbeing, and our everyday routines matter.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ TODAYโ€™S ACTION: Choose one healthy habit.
Pick ONE thing to focus on today: add some physical activity, spend time outside, take movement breaks, make time to unwind or prioritize a good nightโ€™s sleep.

You donโ€™t have to change everything at once. Start with one action you can repeat. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’ฌ What healthy habit will you choose today?

๐ŸŒŽ SPINE SERIES: MEET YOUR SACRUM AND COCCYX Small ๐ŸŒŽ SPINE SERIES: MEET YOUR SACRUM AND COCCYX
Small region. Big role in support!

Our Spine Series continues at the base of your spine with two bones that connect, support and anchor.

๐Ÿ”ต SACRUM: THE FIVE-IN-ONE BONE
The sacrum develops from five vertebrae that fuse into one strong, triangular bone. It connects your spine to your pelvis and helps transfer the weight of your upper body through your pelvis into your legs.

๐Ÿ”ต COCCYX: YOUR TAILBONE
Your coccyx sits just below the sacrum. It usually consists of three to five small vertebrae, which may be partly or fully fused. It provides attachment points for muscles and ligaments, including those that help support your pelvic floor.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Did you know your sacrum starts as five separate vertebrae?

Follow along as our Spine Series explores the spine, one region at a time!

๐ŸŒŽ SPINE SERIES: MEET YOUR LUMBAR SPINE Five bones. ๐ŸŒŽ SPINE SERIES: MEET YOUR LUMBAR SPINE
Five bones. Built for support and movement!

The five vertebrae in your lower back are numbered L1โ€“L5. These are the largest movable vertebrae in your spine, supporting much of your upper bodyโ€™s weight.

๐ŸŸข L1: THE SPINAL CORDโ€™S NEIGHBOR
Your spinal cord usually ends around the L1โ€“L2 level in adults. Below this point, a bundle of nerve roots continues down the spinal canal. Itโ€™s called the cauda equina, Latin for โ€œhorseโ€™s tail,โ€ because of its appearance! ๐Ÿด

๐ŸŸข L2: THE WEIGHT BEARER
L2 is part of your lower backโ€™s support team. Like the other lumbar vertebrae, it has a large vertebral body, the main weight-bearing part of the bone. Lumbar vertebrae are much larger than those in your neck because they support greater loads.

๐ŸŸข L3: ONE OF THE BIG FIVE
L3 sits in the middle of the lumbar spine. Together, these five sturdy vertebrae help support your upper body while allowing your lower back to bend and move.

๐ŸŸข L4: THE HIP-BONE LANDMARK
An imaginary line joining the highest points of your hip bones usually crosses around L4 or the space between L4 and L5. Clinicians use this as an approximate landmark, although its position varies from person to person.

๐ŸŸข L5: THE HEAVY LIFTER
L5 is the largest lumbar vertebra. It sits where your movable lower back meets the sacrum, the triangular bone at the base of your spine, helping transfer weight toward your pelvis.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Which fact surprised you most?

๐ŸŒŽ SPINE SERIES: MEET YOUR THORACIC SPINE Your upp ๐ŸŒŽ SPINE SERIES: MEET YOUR THORACIC SPINE

Your upper and middle back has 12 vertebrae, T1โ€“T12. They connect to your ribs, help protect your heart and lungs, and allow your upper body to turn.

Here are a few surprising connections:

๐ŸŸข T1 marks the beginning of your thoracic spine and connects to your first pair of ribs.

๐ŸŸข T2 connects with your second ribs, helping form the upper rib cage.

๐ŸŸข T3 sits near your shoulder blades, which glide over the rib cage as your arms move.

๐ŸŸข T4โ€“T5 mark the approximate level where your windpipe branches toward each lung.

๐ŸŸข T6 is part of the region that helps your upper body twist.

๐ŸŸข T7 is a traditional shoulder-blade landmark, although the bladeโ€™s position varies.

๐ŸŸข T8 is approximately where a major vein passes through your diaphragm, returning blood from your lower body to your heart.

๐ŸŸข T10 is approximately where your esophagus passes through the diaphragm toward your stomach.

๐ŸŸข T11โ€“T12 connect to your โ€œfloating ribs,โ€ which have no attachment to your breastbone.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Which fact surprised you most?

#WorldSpineDay #SpineHealthForLife #SpineSeries #ThoracicSpine
๐ŸŒŽ SPINE SERIES: MEET YOUR CERVICAL SPINE Seven bon ๐ŸŒŽ SPINE SERIES: MEET YOUR CERVICAL SPINE
Seven bones. Some surprising connections!

Weโ€™re starting at the top with the cervical spine: the seven vertebrae in your neck, numbered C1โ€“C7. They support your head, allow movement and help protect your spinal cord.

๐Ÿ”ต C1: ATLAS
Named after Atlas, who supported the heavens in Greek mythology, C1 supports your skull. This ring-shaped vertebra has no vertebral body, unlike most vertebrae. The joints between your skull and C1 help you nod โ€œyes.โ€

๐Ÿ”ต C2: AXIS
The pivot behind your โ€œnoโ€! C2 has a peg-like projection called the dens. C1 and your head rotate around it, allowing much of your headโ€™s side-to-side turning.

๐Ÿ”ต C3: THE BREATHING CONNECTION
โ€œC3, 4, 5 keep the diaphragm aliveโ€ is a classic anatomy memory aid. It refers to the spinal nerves that contribute to the phrenic nerve, which activates your diaphragm, the main muscle used for breathing.

๐Ÿ”ต C4: THE GIRAFFE CONNECTION ๐Ÿฆ’
You and a giraffe have something in common: seven neck vertebrae! Giraffesโ€™ cervical vertebrae are much longer. This fun fact applies to the whole cervical spine, rather than C4 alone.

๐Ÿ”ต C5: THE SHOULDER AND ARM CONNECTION
The C5 spinal nerve contributes to the brachial plexus, a network formed by nerves C5โ€“T1. This network carries signals for movement and sensation in much of your shoulder, arm and hand.

๐Ÿ”ต C6: A SPECIAL LANDMARK
C6 has a prominent bony landmark called the carotid tubercle. It helps clinicians locate structures in the neck.

๐Ÿ”ต C7: VERTEBRA PROMINENS
C7 is known for its long spinous process, the bony projection at the back of the vertebra. It can form a noticeable bump at the base of your neck, although a neighboring vertebra may be more prominent.

๐Ÿฅ—Nutrition Series | Hydration ๐Ÿ’ง Water is essenti ๐Ÿฅ—Nutrition Series | Hydration

๐Ÿ’ง Water is essential for normal body function and helps maintain fluid balance and normal physiological processes.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Drink regularly throughout the day and remember that fluid needs vary with factors such as activity level, climate, age, pregnancy and individual health needs.

For spine health, hydration is best viewed as one part of an overall healthy lifestyle alongside nutritious eating, regular movement, sleep and other healthy habits-not as a treatment for spinal pain or disc problems.

Looking for a way to keep your World Spine Day campaign going all year?

One organization launched the S.P.I.N.E. Framework campaign, built around five pillars:
๐Ÿ” Screen
 ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Protect
 ๐Ÿ’ก Innovate
 ๐ŸŒฑ Nurture
 ๐Ÿค Engage

Instead of a single event, they created a multi-faceted campaign that combined:
๐ŸŸข Free community spine health screenings
๐ŸŸข Public education booths at a Health Expo
๐ŸŸข Keynote presentations and awareness talks
๐ŸŸข CPD seminars for healthcare professionals
๐ŸŸข Meetings with government and community stakeholders
๐ŸŸข Research grants and student mentorship opportunities
๐ŸŸข Public awareness advertising on branded minibuses

๐Ÿš One standout idea was the use of 15 branded minibuses featuring spine health messages and QR codes, helping spread awareness across routes serving an estimated 1.5 million passengers every day.

IDEAS YOU CAN REPLICATE ๐ŸŒŸ
๐Ÿ”ต Build your campaign around a simple framework or theme
๐Ÿ”ต Offer free community screenings
๐Ÿ”ต Participate in health expos and public events
๐Ÿ”ต Engage policymakers and community leaders
๐Ÿ”ต Deliver CPD opportunities for practitioners

Research on nutrition and musculoskeletal pain is still developing.
๐Ÿ“™ An integrative review found that several nutritional interventions-including Mediterranean-style and plant-focused approaches and some fruit-based interventions-were associated with reduced musculoskeletal pain in included studies, particularly in people with osteoarthritis. The studies were heterogeneous, so these findings should not be interpreted as proof that any single food treats spinal pain.
๐Ÿ“˜ Mediterranean-style dietary patterns have also been shown to improve some, but not all, markers of systemic inflammation.
