South Africa’s G20 Presidency (Dec 2024 – Nov 2025) is prioritising health equity, universal health coverage, and system resilience — key pillars that closely align with the goals of global spinal health advocacy.

As part of this alignment, Cape Town will host the 6th Annual SPINE20 Summit in October 2025, convening global spine experts under the theme: “Sustainable Spine Care for All.” SPINE20 brings together over 30 international spine societies to provide evidence-based policy recommendations to G20 nations, aiming to improve spine care access and reduce the burden of spinal disability worldwide.

On World Drowning Prevention Day, we stand with the World Health Organization (@who) and global advocates to raise awareness about water safety and its critical connection to spinal injury prevention.

Diving into shallow water is a leading cause of traumatic spinal cord injuries. These injuries are often life-changing — and they are preventable.

🔴 More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells, domestic water storage, and swimming pools in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.
