Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and is important for normal bone mineralization. Maintaining adequate vitamin D is therefore one part of supporting skeletal health throughout life.

Food sources include:
βœ… Fatty fish such as salmon and trout
βœ… Fortified foods and beverages
βœ… Egg yolks.

β˜€οΈ The body can also make vitamin D when skin is exposed to sunlight; the amount produced varies with many factors.

Vitamin D needs and supplementation are individual. If you are concerned about your vitamin D status, discuss testing or supplementation with a healthcare professional.

🌟 #EventIdea: Bringing Spine Care to Those Who Nee 🌟 #EventIdea: Bringing Spine Care to Those Who Need It Most

As we count down to World Spine Day on October 16, we're highlighting inspiring initiatives that demonstrate the power of collaboration in improving musculoskeletal health.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ In the Philippines, an outreach mission at New Bilibid Prison brought together Hands for Vitality, CICS, Intercare, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD), and UniversitΓ© du QuΓ©bec Γ  Trois-RiviΓ¨res (UQTR) students and instructors to provide essential musculoskeletal care.

🌎 This international, multidisciplinary effort reached 453 individuals, including 403 Persons Deprived of Liberty and 50 prison personnel, through on-site assessments, spinal care, medical consultations, and collaborative treatment.

The initiative demonstrates several approaches that can be replicated around the world:
βœ… Correctional healthcare partnerships
βœ… Student service-learning opportunities
βœ… Multidisciplinary collaboration
βœ… International partnerships
βœ… Community outreach clinics

This inspiring example from the Philippines shows how spinal health services can reach underserved populations through partnership, innovation, and a shared commitment to improving quality of life.

πŸ™πŸ½ Thank you to CICS for sharing this outstanding World Spine Day #EventIdea and for helping advance spine care in communities that need it most.

#BackFact: Proactive Bone Health When You Have Ost #BackFact: Proactive Bone Health When You Have Osteoporosis

🩻 Being diagnosed with osteoporosis doesn’t mean strong bones are out of reach.

Evidence from the @osteoporosis.iof shows that proactive daily habits can reduce fracture risk and support long‑term mobility and independence. 🦴

πŸ“š What We Know:
β†ͺ Osteoporosis increases the risk of hip, wrist, and vertebral fractures.
β†ͺ Fracture risk rises sharply after age 50, especially in women, and continues to increase with age.
β†ͺ A previous fragility fracture increases the risk of another by 2–3β…Ή, making prevention essential.
β†ͺ Fragility fractures lead to major hospitalizations worldwide, but many are preventable with early action.

Proactive Steps to Support Your Bones
πŸ”΅ Stay active with weight‑bearing movement
↳ Walking, stair climbing, gentle resistance training
πŸ”΅ Get enough calcium + vitamin D to support bone strength and muscle function
πŸ”΅ Prioritize protein to maintain muscle mass and support bone remodeling
πŸ”΅ Reduce fall risks at home
↳ Remove loose rugs
↳ Improve lighting
↳ Clear walkways
πŸ”΅ Talk with your healthcare provider about bone density monitoring and fracture‑prevention strategies

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Healthy Habits To Start Today

🦴While osteoporosis is common, it’s not an inevitable part of getting older. Maintaining strong bones is essential for staying mobile, independent, and active as we age.

πŸ“š Evidence shows that proactive steps can significantly reduce fracture risk and protect long‑term spinal health.

What We Know from the International Osteoporosis Foundation:
🟒 After age 50, bone loss accelerates, increasing the risk of hip, wrist, and vertebral fractures.
🟒 Fragility fractures account for more hospitalizations than breast cancer, heart disease, or diabetes in many countries β†ͺ a major and often overlooked public health issue.
🟒 A previous fragility fracture doubles the risk of future fractures, especially vertebral fractures, which are frequently missed or under-diagnosed.
🟒 Globally, fracture rates are rising as populations age, making prevention more important than ever.

Key Factors That Support Bone Strength in Aging Adults:
πŸ”΅ Adequate calcium and vitamin D help maintain bone mineral density and support muscle function.
πŸ”΅ Weight‑bearing and resistance exercise stimulates bone formation and improves balance, reducing fall risk.
πŸ”΅ Protein intake becomes increasingly important for maintaining muscle mass and supporting bone remodeling.
πŸ”΅ Fall‑prevention strategies significantly reduce fracture risk.
